In a market where hotel performance is increasingly judged on consistency, guest experience, and operational rigour, leadership transitions are closely watched by the MICE and corporate travel ecosystem. General managers today are not just custodians of rooms and restaurants — they are central to how properties position themselves for large-scale events, business travel demand, and long-term revenue stability.

It is against this backdrop that Somrup Chanda has been appointed General Manager of Fairfield by Marriott Kolkata, effective 9 January 2026.

A new beginning

The leadership update was announced by Marriott International, confirming Chanda’s move into the role at the Kolkata property. He brings over two decades of experience across hotel operations, revenue maximisation, marketing, customer experience, and pre-openings, having worked with leading hospitality brands in India and the Middle East.

Chanda began his career with Hyatt in Food and Beverage and progressed through brands including Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, and Hyatt Regency before joining Marriott. His tenure with Marriott includes a pivotal role in launching India’s first Sheraton Grand and contributing to the pre-opening and rebranding of Indore Marriott Hotel, where several award-winning concepts were introduced.

Improved positioning

For the MICE and corporate segments, leadership continuity and operational depth are critical, particularly in urban markets such as Kolkata that cater to conferences, incentive groups, and business-led travel. Chanda’s background in pre-openings and large-format hotel operations is expected to support the property’s positioning within the city’s competitive hospitality landscape.

In 2023, he served as Director of Operations at Bangalore Marriott Hotel Whitefield, where he focused on stabilising operations, enhancing guest satisfaction, improving revenue performance, and positioning the hotel as Karnataka’s largest single-branded property.

Looking ahead

At Fairfield by Marriott Kolkata, Chanda’s mandate will centre on operational excellence and guest-centric performance, areas that directly influence a hotel’s appeal to meeting planners and corporate clients. As the city continues to attract business and event-led demand, leadership appointments such as this underline how hotels are strengthening management capability to stay competitive.
